Koh Phangan History
Phangan Island Culture | Koh Phangan culture and events
Koh Phangan history is a rich, vibrant topic that
deserves to be explored if you're headed to the island in the near
future. The island, which sits in the Gulf of Thailand in the south
eastern portion, is now famous for attractions such as the Full Moon
Party and Haad Rin Beach, but Koh Phangan history runs much deeper.
Phangan Island used to be popular for more historic,
tropical attractions. In 1977 a Bronze Drum of the Dongson Culture was
found in an archeological dig, and that gave historians a firm date that
settlement on the island initially began. Many Koh Phangan history
scholars in Thailand have come to the conclusion that settlement on Koh
Phangan dates back just over 2000 years and that the first groups of
residents were Gypsies from the Malay Peninsula.
These first Gypsies were of Muslim descent, but as odd as it may sound, few Muslims remain on the island. Koh Phangan history also delves into the root of the island's name. The name 'Ngan; comes from a southern language that translates into 'sand bar.' The name fits Koh Phangan because there are a multitude of pearly white beaches that line the gorgeous green waters that the island boasts.

Koh Phangan history is closely tied to its two sister
islands in the vicinity, Koh Samui (south) and the popular Ko Tao
(north). Koh Phangan history also tells us that the oldest structure is
Wat Nai, a stupa near Ban Tai. It Koh Phangan history suggests that it
was probably built about four hundred years ago.
Koh Phangan history doesn't just start twenty years ago
when it became one of the most popular tourist destinations on the
planet, but there is still much to learn about the island's specific
history. Koh Phangan history scholars work on the questions surrounding
the early days of the island at universities across the globe. No matter
what they find, though, backpackers, hikers and tropical vacationers
find the island a great get away from all over the world and Koh Phangan
history a fascinating window to its current tourist culture.
