History of Pattaya
History of Pattaya reveals that it was a small fishing village in the Gulf of Thailand. Initially it was called Pad Tha Ya, meaning, wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast before the commencement of the rainy season and it finally came be known as Pattaya. It was since 1960 with the discovery of Pattaya as a great retreat for repose by the local Bangkok city dwellers that the skyline of Pattaya started undergoing a change. Moreover the American GIs who based their camp in Nakhon Ratchasima as well as the US navy men from Sattahip found Pattaya an official center for rest and relaxation. Hotel accommodation, restaurants, bars and shops mushroomed in Pattaya and since then it has developed into one of the leading beach resorts in the world.
History of Pattaya traces out the development of an unspoiled fishing village of Thailand to a world-renowned beach resort. Pattaya’s location finds mention for the first time in the history of Thailand when in 1767 Phraya Tak who was later coronated as King Taks paraded to Chanthaburi and crossed the area after the decline of the erstwhile capital Ayuthaya.
Pattaya’s increasing popularity among the tourists both local as well as people from the European countries, made the national government in 1978 grant it a city status. The city celebrates its anniversary every 29th of November. With its steady development the infrastructure of the city kept pace. Bangkok’s new airport at Suvarnabhumi is only about an hour’s distance from Pattaya.
With the immense growth of the city from 1960, history of Pattaya draws out a brief sketch of the village of Pad Tha Ya into a city called Pattaya.
